Bio:
Onguma Trails Camp opens on the 1st April and adds to Namibia's options for multi-day walking trips, but arguably it is the only one in such a prolific wildlife area. While a walking safari is all about getting off the beaten track and experiencing the environment at a slower more purposeful pace, no luxury is spared in camp with ensuite bell tents, including extra length beds and even private wood-fired hot tubs.
The two or three night trail is located in a remote area of the 34,000ha Onguma Private Game Reserve, adjacent to Etosha National Park's eastern boundary and can be accessed on a self-drive trip or a fly-in safari. A reasonable degree of fitness is required and you should be used to walking around 10km, Onguma Trails Camp is for adults only and doesn't accept anyone under 16. It would work well to combine the Trails Camp with a stay at another of the five camps in the reserve such as Onguma Bush Camp.
The below is an example itinerary and naturally exact distances and routing will vary trip to trip:
Day 1: You should aim to arrive for 1pm to meet your guide at one of the permanent camps within the Onguma Reserve. From here you will be transferred into Onguma Trails Camp to enjoy a light lunch, followed by a sundowner game-drive or an afternoon walk, finish the day with a three-course meal under the stars.
Day 2: While it is a cool start the day with a 6-8 km guided walking safari, learning to track animals, interpret the bush and understand the traditional uses of wild plants and herbs. Enjoy a scenic bush breakfast, then return to the camp for a late lunch and a chance to relax before a boma dinner and a stargazing presentation.
Day 3: On the two night trail you will enjoy a final morning walk before breakfast and a transfer to meet your onward travel arrangements. On the three night trail you have a further day of exploration on foot or perhaps a nature drive for wildlife viewing further afield. On the three night trip you will also have a chance to learn to learn from Onguma's Conservation Team during an evening presentation.
