Bio:
A Wilderness Camping walking trail can be included as part of a stay at Luambe Camp, which is the only accommodation in the remote Luambe National Park.
What does it involve?
Wilderness Camping is a rugged and adventurous way of exploring this little visited national park in the Luangwa Valley, sandwiched between the more famous parks of the North and South Luangwa.
A typical itinerary normally includes an overnight or two at Luambe Camp or Painted Dog's Lagoon before three nights hiking and camping under the stars. As opposed to the Luxury Camping trail which is also on offer from Luambe Camp, you will carry everything you need with you while out on the trail.
Is it right for me?
A real frontier adventure no doubt, but each walking trail is adapted to the interests and capabilities of its participants, along with local conditions and the time of year/temperature. Should you wish to really challenge yourself and push hard each day to cover lots of ground, this is possible. Equally, should you like more of a comfortable amble with enough time to savour all the smaller details, you notice by being on foot in the bush, that also works.
You will need a moderate level of fitness to carry all of your supplies, through uneven terrain and depending on the time of year it can get quite hot. However, a welcome siesta during the heat of the day is normally included each day.
This is not about luxury, you are sleeping under the stars on camping mats and there is certain amount of 'roughing it' required as well as needing to be comfortable in nature, without technology and mod cons.
Is it safe?
Each walking trail is led by an experienced guide who has the necessary training and certificates to lead walking safaris in Zambia. A national park scout also accompanies every trip and they carry a rifle.
Participants of the trip are expected to help with night watch and if there is seven or eight people on the trip, this would just be for an hour each - a chance to enjoy the serenity and sounds of the African night.
