Bio:
Having opened in May 2024, Karangoma Camp is a traditional safari style tented camp with just six tented rooms, located in the far northern reaches of the Okavango Delta.
The name Karangoma is a Sembukushu word describing ‘drum beating, ancestral healing, bringing good future to the tribe, or, when one is ill, cure dancing’- wow!
It is exactly this experience that the operator Wild Expeditions, who also have camps in Madagascar, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe, hope to offer guests, by reconnecting with nature and the traditional cultures of the Bukakhwa San people.
Have a look at our Okavango Delta and Kalahari Adventure trip idea to see how this camp fits into an itinerary with Nxamaseri Island Lodge and Gham Dhao Lodge.
While the relatively standard safari activities are indeed on offer here, such as walking safaris, morning and afternoon game drives in the this wildlife-rich area and mokoro trips (water-levels dependant), it is the collaboration with the local community that sets the camp apart.
Karangoma was developed in partnership with local elder Olatotse Sarefo and it is just 30km from the camp is the village of Gudigwa, home to a small Bukakhwe San community. Guests can gain a meaningful understanding of the conservation efforts that Karangoma supports to reduce human-wildlife conflict, protect livestock and help the community access better veterinary care. Guests are also welcome to visit the community with the guide and we understand this is done with upmost sensitivity.
